self-styled

The use of the term "self-styled" seems pejorative, as though a maven is somehow only expert in their own opinion. I'm Canadian, and the word is common here, perhaps with a slight hint of camp to it, but certainly not with the implication of delusional tendencies. There's the lovely shade of the raven about the word, a keen-sighted bone-picker.

Definition of maven

Perhaps it's implied meaning has changed, but the term maven, in its original Yiddish, is pejorative. It means a "self-proclaimed expert." The closest term in English, I believe, is a "know-it-all." 98.246.151.152 04:53, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Barry Hirsch
