Oriental origin edit
Some sources suggest an alternative oriental origin: Hindi मर्कट (markaṭ, “ape, monkey”), Bengali মর্কট (markaṭ, “monkey”), Sanskrit मर्कट (markaṭa, “ape, monkey”). Should it be mentioned? Wyang (talk) 02:25, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
- That theory should be mentioned, yes — or more precisely, the mention of it should be moved. It's already in meerkat#Dutch. As that Dutch entry notes, however, it's a problematic theory, given how early the term is attested in Germanic.
Sprache und Evolution: Grundlagen der Evolution und Ansätze (1990) offers a combination of the two theories, saying Germanic sailors interpreted the Indian word as "Meer-Katze".
