Gender Usage

Would that be said to a feminine person, or is it said by a feminine person?

I am a man visiting the Azores. A female taxi-driver said "Obrigado" to me. I asked an English-speaking guide what he made of that and he told me I should say "Obrigada" to a womain and "Obrigado" to a man. (I have decided to say "Obrigad' " to everyone...) — This unsigned comment was added by 85.241.144.240 (talk).

I can’t speak for Azoreans, but here’s how the situation is in Brazil: (o)brigado is used by men and (o)brigada is used by woman. Some women use (o)brigado but this is considered nonstandard and they are often promptly corrected. — Ungoliant ^(falai) 18:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
