@LatinGuy87 Googling the preceding words shows most sources reporting other readings, especially propterea quod or (oro) propter quid.

It is exceedingly unlikely that a per quid meaning 'why?' could have existed in 54 CE, several centuries before per took on the meaning 'because of'. If it had, there should be more evidence than a single reading contradicted by most sources.

Sense 2 is even more unlikely (only per quod is even remotely imaginable, and that only in far later Latin) and, one assumes, a backwards projection of Romance usage more than a millennium after the pseudo-attestation. Nicodene (talk) 03:35, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
