I think this is simply an incorrect spelling. Counting google hits, they're essentially all the one-l spelling. — This comment was unsigned.

• More one-l at News, Scholar. About equal at Books. I'd call two-l an alternative spelling, not a misspelling. Two-l spellings are often more common in the UK. DCDuring TALK 01:46, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
