There is an islet among the Isles of Scilly called "the Pol" ([1], [2]), and an islet in Jamaica Bay called "Canarsie Pol".

I'm trying to determine whether there is a common noun pol, and what it means (besides "politician", of course).

The first 120 hits at google books:+"a|the pol" anchorage|anchor show nothing relevant other than those two hits for the Scilly "Pol". And the first 120 hits at google books:+"a|the pol" island|isle|islet show no relevant hits (though they do imply that pol is also a derivative of sugar cane, something worth looking into, but not my own interest at the moment).

Anyone else have any other search ideas, or others?—msh210 17:52, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

US-specific? edit

I've never encountered "pol" as an informal term for a politician in the UK. Is this specific to the US, and if so, should that be mentioned in the definition? -- Oliver PEREIRA (talk) 07:54, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Return to "pol" page.
