Does this word actually come from words meaning 'to build'? This seems more closely related to "abscond," where 'cond' deals with hiding something or stowing it away.
- That was a bad translation. Recondere can mean "re-establish" but really its usual meaning was "to hide". So yes, you're basically right, it is cognate with the cond in (deprecated template usage) abscond. Ƿidsiþ 15:57, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Pronunciation edit
I've restored the OneLook cite as a reference for the definition as "learnèd" which the OED omits. However, OneLook's pronunciations are simply wrong and the OED's should be maintained. — LlywelynII 19:44, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
