From French, not English? edit

This word really came into Irish from Old French, not English? Do we know when the term first started being used in Irish? 173.89.236.187 17:49, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

The word isn't in the Dictionary of the Irish Language, so it's hard to know how long it's been used in Irish, but the ú vocalism of the second syllable makes it unlikely to have been borrowed from English. It probably entered Middle Irish at the time of the Norman invasion of Ireland in the late 12th century. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 18:29, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
