The etymology of this word claims it comes from "to speak" but gives no explanation for what sounds an implausible etymology.


I think that the Norwegian word sprog should be mentioned as well. It has the same meaning as Danish sprog but I do not know how it is pronounced. It would be interesting if the usage of sprog in Norwegian could be sketched here as well, as it is---to my knowing---not normally used anymore, språk being the preferred form. But it lingers fx in the name of the Norwegian Academy for Sprog og Litteratur, and it is probably still a possible word-form in either bokmål (official) or riksmål (unofficial) Norwegian.
