I was originally going to add another definition, viz:

  1. (nonstandard) a raccoon, especially in a Japanese context

However I'm not sure about it. I am aware of many instances where a tanuki is called a raccoon (it happens in translations all the time, presumably for economy, possibly sometimes due to actual confusion; e.g. the comment on Mario's tanooki suit [1]). I'm not sure if raccoons are ever actually called tanuki by people writing in English though (though I know foxes get called kitsune). The place to look for this would most likely be in fanart and anime art forums, the question being how to determine whether someone who uses 'tanuki' really means 'raccoon' or not. —Muke Tever 15:29, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)
