This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage

edit

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections, and on talk pages, to cite the The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language website (https://www.ahdictionary.com, which uses the 2016 (5th) print edition), as well as the 1971 and 2000 (4th) print editions of the work.

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following positional or named parameters:

  • |1= or |entry= – the entry in the Dictionary to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |edition= – by default, the template links to the online (5th) edition of the Dictionary. To cite a print edition instead, use one of the following:
    • |edition=1971 – for the 1971 edition.
    • |edition=4th – for the 2000 (4th) edition.
  • |2=, |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) of a print edition of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. Use |pages= if indicating a range of pages, and separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
  • |3=, |column=, or |columns= – the column number(s) of a print edition of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. Use |columns= if indicating a range of columns, and separate the first and last column numbers of the range with an en dash.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the Dictionary.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
