Usage

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote the serial publication by Samuel Johnson entitled The Rambler (1750–1752, 8 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Volume I (numbers 1–27). Volume II (numbers 28–52). Volume III (numbers 53–78). Volume IV (numbers 79–104).

Volume V (numbers 105–131). Volume VI (numbers 132–158). Volume VII (numbers 159–183). Volume VIII (numbers 184–208).

In general, the scans of the work are of poor quality, with missing pages and text cut off due to narrow margins. Replace them with better scans if possible.

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |1= or |issue= – mandatory: the issue number quoted from in Arabic numerals. This parameter must be specified for the template to determine the volume number (I–VIII) quoted from.
• |2= or |date= – mandatory: the date of the issue quoted from, like this: |date=20 March 1750. In 1750 and 1751, the dates were stated according to the Julian calendar and the calendar year ran from 25 March of one year to 24 March of the next. Therefore, the work uses the convention of indicating two years for dates between 1 January and 24 March. Do not follow this convention; instead of specifying such a date as |date=20 March 1749–1750, use |date=1 March 1750. The template automatically determines the date according to the Gregorian calendar for display as the actual date of the work, and formats the Julian calendar date for display as the date indicated on the issue.
• |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

Note the following pagination errors:

• Volume III
  • Pages 24, 25, 142, 145, and 158–160 are missing.
• Volume V
  • Pages 25, 26, 121, and 122 are missing, but the text is unaffected.
  • Pages 62, 63, 100, 101, 200, and 202 are missing.
• Volume VII
  • Pages 44 and 45 are missing.

• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
