Regular nouns edit
For regular nouns, this template takes one parameter. The template calls the PAGENAME for the singular form and uses this as the base for the plural form.
- Examples:
- For asztalterítő (“tablecloth”) (adds -k to form plural):
{{hu-noun|k}}
- asztalterítő (plural asztalterítők)
- For hónap (“month”) (adds -ok to form plural):
{{hu-noun|ok}}
- hónap (plural hónapok)
- For nyelv (“tongue, language”) (adds -ek to form plural):
{{hu-noun|ek}}
- nyelv (plural nyelvek)
- For tök (“pumpkin, squash”) (adds -ök to form plural):
{{hu-noun|ök}}
- tök (plural tökök)
- For asztalterítő (“tablecloth”) (adds -k to form plural):
In cases where there is a vowel shift in the suffix, the shifted suffix is simply used.
- Examples:
Irregular nouns edit
For irregular nouns, where the stem drops a vowel to form the plural, the plural form must be given in full using the pl= option.
- Examples:
Nouns with two plural forms edit
Some nouns have two plurals: with and without stem change. In these cases the second plural is provided by |alt=
and then the second plural (short for alternative). Such nouns are collected in Category:Hungarian nouns with multiple plural forms.
- and for the other order of appearance:
Nouns lacking a plural form edit
For nouns without plural forms, use |1=-
.
- Example:
- For angol (“the English language”):
{{hu-noun|-}}
- angol (uncountable)
- For angol (“the English language”):
Nouns not usually having a plural form edit
If a plural form is still supplied as a second parameter (either unnamed or named pl or plural or alt), then the description will be usually uncountable, plural followed by the plural form based on the second parameter.
- Example:
- For gallium (normally uncountable as ‘the metal gallium’; but occasionally also countable as ‘a piece of this metal’):
{{hu-noun|-|ok}}
- gallium (usually uncountable, plural galliumok)
- For gallium (normally uncountable as ‘the metal gallium’; but occasionally also countable as ‘a piece of this metal’):
Nouns which are both countable and uncountable edit
Some nouns have no plural for one sense, but do have one for another sense. For these, use 1=~ and use the second parameter to give the plural ending, or the pl= parameter if it is irregular.
- Example:
- For portugál (“the Portuguese language, a Portuguese person”):
{{hu-noun|~|ok}}
- portugál (countable and uncountable, plural portugálok)
- For portugál (“the Portuguese language, a Portuguese person”):
