former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

English edit

Proper noun edit

(the) former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

  1. A provisional designation (because of a naming dispute with Greece) formerly used by many international organizations to refer to the Republic of North Macedonia, a country on the Balkan Peninsula. (Abbreviated FYROM.)

Usage notes edit

The word "former" (and the definite article "the" if used) are explicitly and intentionally in lower case, as this is a "provisional designation" and not the present or intended name of the state. Sometimes seen as derogatory due to the Republic of North Macedonia wishing to disassociate itself from Yugoslavia after its Declaration of Independence in 1991.
