Below is a list of issues that I have run into while creating Japanese entries. This is a work in progress and when more complete I will present it for discussion and available options.

Verbs

edit
  • Need a way to identify the stem.
    ex: yom-, tabe-, sak-
  • Need a way to indicate transitivity
    Transitive or intransitive
  • Need a way to indicate irregular verbs
    K-irregular:
    N-irregular
    S-irregular
    R-irregular
  • Need a way to indicate the classical form of a verb
ex: 食べる < 食ぶ, 逃げる > 逃ぐ
  • Need a way to distinguish between upper and lower verb classes
  • Suggest common English terminology for verb classes:
    四段: quadrigrade
    五段: quintigrade
    上一段: upper monograde
    上二段: upper bigrade
    下一段: lower monograde
    下二段: lower bigrade
    カ変: k-irregular
    サ変: s-irregular
    ナ変: n-irregular
    ラ変: r-irregular

Adjectives

edit
  • The classical form of adjectives should be specified in entry
ex: 高い from 高し, 新しい from 新し
  • Need a way to indicate type of adjective: -ku or -siku

Other

edit
  • WT:AJA recommends that "[d]efinitions should be restricted to simple translation glosses". There is often large semantic areas that do not overlap. Looking at a translation gloss is often uninformative or deceptive about the meaning and actual usage. Should emphasize descriptive definitions possibly followed by translation glosses.
