• Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.

• Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.

Assisted addition of translations

Just a friendly piece of advice, you don't have to save after every single translation you add, you can add multiple and then click the save button when you're all done. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 12:35, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Translations

You can add multiple translations with the "assisted method" before hitting the save button. It's not a huge deal but IMO it's better as it means less clutter in RecentChanges and page histories. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 08:42, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Translation question

Did you mean to add this translation as French? You've used the lang code "ff" which is apparently for Fula, when what I'm guessing you meant is "fr". Also, please follow my above advice about adding multiple translations at once, you're generating such unnecessary clutter by adding them one at a time...Acolyte of Ice (talk) 10:53, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Translations in several languages

Please don't add translations in languages you don't speak. It's clear that you're copying them from somewhere, and we'd rather be missing translations than have incorrect ones added by someone who doesn't know enough about these languages to recognize mistakes. I only speak a few languages, so I'm not qualified to comment on the really poorly documented ones, and neither are you. That's the issue. See Wiktionary:Translations#Sources for more commentary on why we discourage copied translations. I would encourage you to find other ways to contribute -- in the languages you speak. Translations

You are still adding large numbers of translations in languages that you surely do not speak. If you continue doing this, I will block you and start mass-removing them. Theknightwho (talk) 02:56, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

May I ask a few questions? Firstly, is there a rule in the English Wiktionary that I cannot add many translations to the translations section? I don't know such a rule, but if there is one, then please show it to me. Secondly, are there any restrictions on adding translations by those users who do not speak them perfectly? Again, I don't know such a rule. Show it to me. Thirdly, have you found at least one mistake in my translations to be able to say with complete confidence that I am harming the project? If you answer “no” to all three questions, then it turns out that your actions will become arbitrary in relation to me as a user of the project. You are not right. Keep in mind the following: I have studied many languages, but I do not speak them perfectly (as far as I know, this is not required for project users to make their edits); I check my translations against dictionaries and other sources before adding them to the translations section (you can inspect my edits and make sure they are correct); I am familiar with the rules of the project and I act in accordance with them, I don't break them. Me too, I add translations to languages I don't speak well but I have shown interest over years. Occasionally I make mistakes. I get corrected and told off. I correct my own older mistakes. You are less known to people here.

I have issues with how you add one translation at a time, instead of multiple translations, which messes up the history. You were told about this on your talk page but you refuse to learn.

Secondly, you work with more complicated multiword terms, which are apparently copied from Wikipedia or other places, which may be full of errors or wrong forms. E.g. I wouldn't trust myself adding e.g. Tamil ஆட்சி மொழி (āṭci moḻi) or Telugu అధికార భాష (adhikāra bhāṣa) to official language#Translations. These terms are not found in dictionaries.

We want the project to be accurate and trustworthy, completeness is not the priority. Since you spend your edits on adding translations and haven't demonstrated in skills in languages, people have doubts and it's understandable. If you add so many languages in one go, including obscure with limited resources, you make fellow editors not to trust you. Anatoli T. ^{(обсудить}/^вклад) 06:47, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

It surprises me, really. Anyone can correct my translations if they are wrong, but instead of just checking, I get attacked with blocking warnings. “You see, you are unknown to anyone here, we doubt your translations, they could be taken from Wikipedia (which is not entirely true) etc.”. OK, I get it. Do you want me not to add translations? I won't do it. This was part of my work for the Russian Wiktionary, anyway. I wanted to help, but you have your own quirks. I am sure you can do something you're good at it and know enough about. We can afford to be stricter about quality requirements (this actually includes stress marks you've been failing to add), unlike the Russian Wiktionary. Anatoli T. ^{(обсудить}/^вклад) 07:32, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
