Welcome edit

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Dvortygirl 05:10, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

reniform edit

Out of curiosity, why did you add the references to reniform? The refernces you added are mispleading, as they are not the source of the information in the page. I added the term from my own experience in botany, and probably first saw the term in a textbook about ferns. --EncycloPetey 19:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

But if they're not the source of the information, then what purpose do they serve? At best, all they do is point out that the word appears in other dictionaries. At worst, they imply that we copied from other dictionaries. It would be much better to add quotations demonstrating use of the word, rather than secondary references. --EncycloPetey 19:49, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Appearance in a dictionary does not prove that a word is "real". The words onychophagist and elemenopy have never been found outside of dictionaries, and the latter is known to have been invented deliberately as a hoax by the writer of the first dictionary in which it appeared. So I have to disagree with your assertions. --EncycloPetey 21:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
