Welcome! edit
Welcome!
Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- Wiktionary Tutorial
- How to edit a page
- How to start a page
- Our format guidelines
- Criteria for inclusion
- Wiktionary Sandbox (a safe place for testing syntax)
- What Wiktionary is not
- FAQ
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Versageek 19:36, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Barnstars edit
Hi, Wiktionary apparently don't have a barnstar awarding system.--Jyril 19:54, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I must admit that I'm not familiar with them although I got one at Wikipedia for my work on asteroid articles... You might want to consult the Wikipedia:Barnstars page.--Jyril 20:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi, you've just asked me about this as well, and I too am afraid I don't know anything about how barnstars work. Yes I've seen them on Wikipedia, but I never did edit much over there, so I've never gotten one before nor certainly awarded any. (Right now our most active contributors are awarded with sysop privelages since the Wiktionary is growing so rapidly.) Those who contribute but do not participate are generally left to themselves, for instance a handful of anonymous contributors who have declined to register. But I and others are certainly open to suggestions. DAVilla 23:10, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Vandalism vs newbie tests edit
Please don't assume people are deliberately vandalising when what they are doing is just as likely to be a newbie test. Remember many of our users have never seen a wiki and they may not understand English very well. We have a series of {{test}} templates you may wish to use - they are in Category:User_warning_templates. Kappa 20:09, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Newbies edit
Since you've been here for about 3 weeks, without an article edit, it seems to me that biting other newbies might be just a bit agressive?
It sometimes takes newcomers a bit of time to learn things around here. It's a dictionary.
Robert Ullmann 21:29, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Do not edit User: pages (other than your own of course). Even our sysops don't do that, except in unusual circumstances. Robert Ullmann 21:33, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- You shouldn't copy text to user talk pages; often someone is trying to get google (or whatever) search visibility. It just gets deleted. Robert Ullmann 22:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Please take some time to get to know us better.. edit
We appreciate your efforts at Recent Changes, but you really need to spend some additional time familiarizing yourself with English Wiktionary policies and practices before jumping in with both feet in a quasi-admin role.
We don't label users as vandals on their talk pages or user pages or keep lists of vandals/vandal IP's - preferring instead to follow the concepts outlined in w:WP:DENY. Persistent vandals are sometimes warned, but more often than not, they are blocked for a few hours or a day. Most just hit once & leave.
We use 'patrolled edits' here on English Wiktionary - we may not be right on top of every change as it is made, but every anon contribution is eventually checked by one of the admins.
Some of the items you identify as vandalism - aren't vandalism, as others have mentioned. You would be very surprised at some of the terms which do meet WT:CFI. Also, please don't tag vandalized pages with {{delete}} without first checking the page history to see if there is a real article under the vandalized copy.
As I said to start with, we do appreciate your efforts, but please get to know us better before continuing.
Thanks --Versageek 22:21, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Your block & quasi-admin activities. edit
As I mentioned in my previous message, we generally don't issue warnings, but rather short blocks - your block was only 1hr. It was however, accidental - you accidentally recreated a deleted article (by saving it with the delete tag after it had been deleted, despite the automated warning).. you were blocked for recreating deleted content.. - the block was reversed by another admin when he realized what had happened. It's not the best system in the world, but at the moment - that is how it works here - we are working on a more formal process for blocking at WT:BLOCK.
On an semi-related side note, I strongly encourage you to become more familiar with how things are done here before you engage in any further quasi-admin activities. Tagging obvious junk as {{delete}} is generally unnecessary, especially when there are admins who appear active in recent changes, if you do tag - please note that you are tagging for delete & the reason in the edit summary. --Versageek 01:21, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- See blanket stitch and running stitch: these are perfectly good entries; they need wikifying and a bit of copyediting on the defintions, that is all. They don't qualify for delete, much less speedy. Robert Ullmann 15:39, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- You are making more work than you are solving; and your edit to X qualifies as POV vandalism. Robert Ullmann 15:39, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Reverting edit
Again, your attempts to revert vandalism at Talk:Wikipedia resulted in an unreadable page [1]. I have a feeling you are trying to revert by cutting & pasting from the "show changes" screen, which would be incorrect. Please familiarize yourself with this page before attempting any further reverting of edits. Thanks. --ZimZalaBim 15:08, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- You want to do RC patrolling, and you don't even know the basics? Please, if you want to participate, learn what we do here, and contribute to entries. Robert Ullmann 15:30, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- I would strongly recommend you do not look at RC, do not edit anon users talk pages, do not try to tag pages as vandalism or whatever. RC patrolling is not a privilege or a challenge, it is drudgery undertaken by those who would rather be doing something else. At present I am spending too much time patrolling you. Find a useful place to contribute. Robert Ullmann 16:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- You have seen fit to ignore the advice in the previous paragraph. Blocked/infinite. If someone else cares to try to help you, they can monitor you. Robert Ullmann 10:40, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Your unblocking edit
I am saddened to see that you were unblocked. Worse, that your behavior has degraded somewhat, since then. We don't welcome all accounts here. Most accounts created here are vandal throw-away accounts. Once again, you violate w:WP:DENY with your actions. Please remember that each project has its own rules, procedures, policies, common practices and norms. Do not expect a warning before the next sysop blocks you. --Connel MacKenzie 16:35, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Red links are ok here.. edit
Red links are ok here, we use them to let us know that entries need to be created. --Versageek 02:59, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Check histories edit
Be sure to check page histories before tagging for deletion. I.e, chwas had a valid definition, and was just the victim of vandalism. --ZimZalaBim 03:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Are you a military expert? edit
Have you served in the military? What branch? --Connel MacKenzie 23:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- You won't need to guess, when I am being rude. I was not being rude with my question above. It is a simple question. You reverted an edit that was appropriately tagged, so I have to wonder what your justification for that, was. --Connel MacKenzie 23:39, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Simply containing the word fuck is not POV. While much vandalism here does contain the word fuck, it does not guarantee (nor even imply) that it is vandalism.
Today is hump day...why are you wishing me a good weekend? --Connel MacKenzie 23:45, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
You are mistaken about those entries in FTW, while these phrases might be considered POV in an encyclopedic article about war or the world, this is a dictionary. We are defining the initialism FTW. We define terms as they are used - not as we think they should be used.. We are descriptive not prescriptive. In real life, FTW is an initialism which can represent the phrases Fuck The World, or Fuck The War .. it's a FACT - there is NO POV involved.
Once again, I suggest you take some time to understand the nature of the project and how things are done around here before continuing to edit in the manner that you have been. To date, many of your contributions have been disruptive and not in the best interests of the project, the only reason you haven't been blocked for much longer than the few short blocks that have been imposed so far is that it's clear your transgressions are a result of ignorance and inexperience, rather than malice. If you continue to disregard the advice given by the members of this community, you will be blocked. --Versageek 00:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sir James, Versageek provides good advice. Please heed it. --ZimZalaBim 04:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Ofuscated "sig" edit
Please return your sig to the default, or you may find yourself blocked again, this time for having punctuation characters in your username (pecisely like a typical vandal.) --Connel MacKenzie 01:39, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Goals edit
You have set high goals, but you still are not familiar with community-set formatting standards. In particular, we do not link the headers of common language names (see WT:TOP40), and we generally do not link the names of parts of speech when they appear in headers. --EncycloPetey 03:00, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed edit
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Sir James Paul. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Sir James Paul~enwiktionary that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
