Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Conrad.Irwin 12:02, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Quotations edit

In this edit [1], you italicize a quotation. That is counter to Wiktionary style. We italicize invented example sentences, but do not italicize quotations. --EncycloPetey 01:28, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

scenic edit

The relevant policy is at WT:CFI#Brand names; we've had many long discussions about whether to include brand names. But if Scenic merits inclusion, then it should be at the capitalized location Scenic. --EncycloPetey 06:33, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Last question edit

We usually prefer to have the context templates all included in a single set of parentheses. Some context labels are formatted to do this, but in cases where they aren't, you can use {{context}} to amalgamate them. In other words: (transitive) (law should instead look like (transitive, law) and this can be done either with {{transitive|law}} or with {{context|transitive|law}} in cases where the first template isn't set up to recognize additional context parameters. --EncycloPetey 21:10, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Form of templates edit

Please do no remove wikilink brackets around word in "form of" templates like {{plural of}}. Yes, the template will still work if they are removed, but the statistics count will no longer recognize the page as "good" if there are no wikilink brackets on the page. --EncycloPetey 02:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

For example edit

We try very hard to avoid redirects here on Wiktionary. While we use them in certain situations (most famously for various inflected forms of phrases), "For example" is exactly the type of redirect that Robert Ullmann is spending so much time trying to eliminate. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 01:15, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

application edit

Hello TestPilot -- Thanks for your contribution of a new sense for application. I reworked it a bit, because the definition as you wrote it was for a verb, not a noun. Please take careful note of the part of speech (POS) when adding definitions. Respectfully -- WikiPedant 16:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WHAT??? I have never added new sense to application!!! never! What are you talking about? TestPilottalk to me! 02:29, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hello TestPilot -- Sorry. I was looking at this edit, but was overly hasty. I see now that you did not add the entire sense. You just added the {{context}} template to that sense. My mistake. -- WikiPedant 04:21, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Deprecated templates: edit

All the Etymology templates were ruthlessly deprecated in favour of {{etyl}} - [2] Conrad.Irwin 02:07, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
