Borrowed from Old Gutnish *Wiburg, from wi (“sanctuary, sacred place”) + burg (“city, castle”). Compare Swedish Viborg (equivalent, perhaps a nativized borrowing of the Gutnish etymon), whence German Wiborg and Russian Выборг (Vyborg).
