First attested as waddinxuene in 1233. From Middle Dutch waddinsvene, potentially a compound of a hydronym derived from wadde (“ford, fordable stretch of a watercourse”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and veen (“peat bog, marsh”).
