Etymology edit

First attested as wytghardera ny land in 1485. Borrowed from West Frisian Wytgaard, potentially derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian wīt (white) and garda (garden) or, alternatively, from a surname and werd (artificial mound used for habitation). Compare Bilgaard.
