Wiktionary:About Quenya

Quenya is a very detailed language - as is expected of constructed languages. There are around ten different noun declensions, and this guide will attempt to cover them all. There are also five verb tenses. For a complete guide, read wikibooks:Quenya.

Orthography edit

Since Tengwar is not officially added to the Unicode yet, the entries should be Latin script.

e and ë edit

The final short vowel /e/ is always spelled “ë”, except in monosyllabic words. It's also spelled “ë” in a sequence of two or more vowels, that don't form a diphthong.

c, k and qu edit

The sound /k/ should always be spelled as “c” even before the vowels “e” and “i” (except in Early Quenya and older forms). It's labialized counterpart /kʷ/ is spelled “qu”.

Tengwar edit

The Tengwar script is automatically generated by the Template:qya-head, Template:qya-self, as well as templates using the Module:qya-headword.

Outside of those, the Template:tengwar can be used.

In order to display the Tengwar script correctly, at least one of the following fonts has to be installed:

  • Tengwar Annatar
  • Tengwar Eldamar
  • Tengwar Elfica
  • Tengwar Formal
  • Tengwar Gothika
  • Tengwar Noldor
  • Tengwar Parmaite
  • Tengwar Quenya
  • Tengwar Sindarin

Automatic conversion edit

The Tengwar in the head-word templates are automatically generated from the page name or from the parameter "head" if given.

It can be overwritten by the parameter “teng” if necessary:

  • ethymologic spelling with letters of sounds, that aren't used anymore, use “þ” for súle and “ñ” for noldo
  • split up letter combinations, that are normally digraphs, e.g. “n.w” for númen+wilya instead of “nw” for nwalme
