From Middle Welsh Ystradwel, from Old Welsh Stradwel, Stradwawl, possibly from Old Welsh strat (valley), from Proto-Brythonic *strad, Proto-Celtic *stratos[1] + Old Welsh guaul (rampart, boundary), from Proto-Brythonic *gwọl, from Proto-Celtic *wālos (hedge, enclosure).[2]
