A slang term originally derived from the middle character of 唐山人. 阿 is used to describe a person in the familiar sense.

Usage notes

An old-fashioned term that was primarily used to describe non-Hoklo people from Mainland China, a large number of whom had emmigrated to Taiwan after 1949. This term later came to be replaced by gōa-séng-lâng (外省人).
