Usage notes

In Finnish the ending of the ablative is -lta or -ltä. It is used to indicate:

  1. removal from a surface in an indeterminate location
    • Kalle palasi mereltä.
    Kalle returned from the sea.
    • Löysin kadulta lompakon.
    I found a wallet on the street.
    • Auto suistui tieltä jyrkässä mutkassa.
    The car fell off the road in a sharp corner.
  2. removal from the possession of, or otherwise from a person concretely or figuratively
    • Kallelta varastettiin lompakko.
    Kalle's wallet was stolen from him.
    • Minulta et saa mitään!
    You are not going to get anything from me!
    • Sinulta tuli hyvä ehdotus. (Lit.: A good proposal came from you)
    You made a good proposal.
  3. time, especially full and half hours
    • Jääkiekkoharjoitukset alkavat kolmelta ja loppuvat puoli kuudelta. (Lit.: at half six)
    The icehockey training starts at three o'clock and ends at half past five.
