an- (on) +‎ beten (pray). Compare Latin adoro.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈanˌbeːtən/, [ˈʔanˌbeːtn̩]
  • (file)
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: an‧be‧ten

Verb edit

anbeten (weak, third-person singular present betet an, past tense betete an, past participle angebetet, auxiliary haben)

  1. (transitive, religion or figurative) to worship, to adore
    Synonym: huldigen

Usage notes edit

  • Particularly in Catholic contexts, a precise distinction must be made between beten zu (“to pray to”) and anbeten (“to worship”). While the former may be done towards God, angels, and saints, the latter is due to God alone.
