angle iron
English edit
Noun edit
angle iron (plural angle irons)
- A length of iron or steel, having an L-shaped cross section, used as a structural support
- 1938, Xavier Herbert, chapter VII, in Capricornia[1], page 92:
- The homestead […] was of corrugated iron on an angle-iron frame.
Usage notes edit
Although the sense of angle iron in reference to steel angle stock is a misnomer (comparable to tin foil in reference to aluminum foil), it is well known and still sometimes heard.
