From Latin arsenicum, from Ancient Greek ἀρσενικόν (arsenikón, yellow arsenic) (influenced by ἀρρηνικός (arrhēnikós, potent, virile)), ultimately (via Semitic) from Middle Iranian *zarnīk (gold-coloured), compare Persian زرنیخ (zarnix, orpiment), زرنی (zarni).
