From Proto-Albanian *aiskā, from Proto-Indo-European *aisk- 'bright, shining'. Cognate to Lithuanian áiškus (“clear, bright”), Old Norse eiskra (“rage before hot excitement”)[1]. Singular of eshkë. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éHōs 'ashes'. Compare Hittite (ḫašša, “potash, ashes”), Ancient Greek ἄζα (aza, “dry dirt”), Old English æsce 'ashes'[2].
