A genericization of translingual Asplenium (the spleenworts), from Linnaeus's New Latin adjustment of Latin asplenon (spleenwort), from Ancient Greek ἄσπληνον (ásplēnon, spleenwort), from ἀ- (a-, un-) + σπλήν (splḗn, spleen) + -ον (-on, -um), from its use to cure anthrax in livestock.
