avene f

  1. plural of avena

Latvian edit

Avenes

Etymology edit

Derived from the word avs “ewe” (cf. auns) +‎ -ene. Raspberries are compared to sheep because of their softness and the tiny projections on their surface. Another possible motivation is that sheep often eat raspberry leaves. Cognates include Lithuanian aviẽtė.[1]
