From Old Swedish byssa, bössa (“rifle, cannon”), from Middle Low German büsse (“box, gun”), from Medieval Latin buxis, from Ancient Greek πῠξῐ́ς (puxís), from πῠ́ξος (púxos, “box wood”). Cognate with bush.
