Inherited from Middle French baptesme, from Old French batesme, bapteme, baptesme (earlier batesma), a semi-learned borrowing from Ecclesiastical Latin baptisma, from Ancient Greek βάπτισμα (báptisma), and Late Latin baptismus, baptismum from Ancient Greek βαπτισμός (baptismós). Doublet of baptisme.
