Probably from Proto-Celtic *verroccon (“large rock”), though likely influenced by Latin verruca (“wart, raised place”), both from Proto-Indo-European *wers- (“peak, highland”) (Old Church Slavonic врьхъ (vrĭxŭ, “peak”)).
