English edit

Noun edit

beat mixing (uncountable)

  1. Alternative form of beatmixing
    • 2004, Tom Frederikse, Xtreme DJ, page 23:
This allows the DJ to then beat mix the two records (for a few bars usually) when mixing from one to the other. In order for beat mixing not to sound like a car crash, the two records must keep perfect time and their sounds, beats and music must all blend together.
    • 2013, Dr Sophy Smith, Hip-Hop Turntablism, Creativity and Collaboration:
Early beat mixing was a high precision technique due to the lack of speed adjustment on the turntables, requiring the DJ to start the record at exactly the right moment.
    • 2016, Sophy Smith, Hip-Hop Turntablism, Creativity and Collaboration, page 23:
Although Grasso was not the first DJ to mix two records together, he was the first to deliberately perfect beat mixing as a creative DJ technique commenting, 'Nobody had really kept the beat going ... They'd get them to dance, then change records, so you had to catch the beat again. It never flowed.'
