Dutch edit

Etymology edit

Traditionally considered a compound of beeldje +‎ -s- +‎ koop (stem of kopen (to buy)) (in which case it would be an exocentric compound, with an unusual head), but considered a univerbation of beeldjes +‎ koop based on the slogan beeldjes te koop (“statuettes for sale”) by the WNT.[1]

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈbeːlt.jəsˌkoːp/
  • Hyphenation: beeld‧jes‧koop

Noun edit

beeldjeskoop m (plural beeldjeskopen)

  1. (dated, chiefly singular) A street salesman of statuary. [late 18th–early 20th c.]
