Etymology edit
From Middle Low German belonen or German belohnen, equivalent to be- + löna. Cognate with Danish belønne, Norwegian Bokmål belønne, Dutch belonen, Afrikaans beloon, Limburgish beloene, West Frisian beleanje, Saterland Frisian beloonje, Luxembourgish belounen and Yiddish באַלוינען (baloynen).
