Possibly a blend of German Bank and English bench, both ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bankiz (“raised surface, slope, bench”). Doublet of banko.

Borrowed from Esperanto benko, English bench, French banc, German Bank, Italian banco, Spanish banco, all ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bankiz. The initial vowel e was chosen instead of a so not to cause confusion with banko (“bank”).
