Dutch edit

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /bəˈsɛfən/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: be‧sef‧fen
  • Rhymes: -ɛfən

Etymology 1 edit

From Middle Dutch beseffen, from Old Dutch *biseffen, from bi- +‎ *seffen. The latter part is from Proto-Germanic *sabjaną.

Verb edit

beseffen

  1. (transitive) to realize
Usage notes edit

Beseffen is not reflexive, but occasionally it is wrongly used reflexively: zich beseffen. This is probably a contamination of zich realiseren (to realize), with the same meaning, but reflexive.
