From Proto-Germanic *biwandijaną (“to turn around”). Cognate with Old Saxon biwendian, Old High German biwenten, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (biwandjan). Equivalent to be- +‎ wendan.
