- Often siud is replaced by the person, animal, thing etc that "there once was":
- Bha boireannach ann uaireigin leis an robh... ― Once upon a time there was a woman who had... (literally, “Once there was a woman who had...”)
- Bha starrag ann uaireigin a bha... ― Once upon a time there was a crow who was... (literally, “Once there was a crow who was...”)
