Possibly from Latin *pastica, from pastus, although with unsolved phonetic difficulties. More likely from *bjershkë, a derivative of bie 'to fall' (cf. pjeshkë < *pjershkë < Lat persica). The term could be the source or related to the oronym Beskidy mountains.
