From Early Scots bowsum (obedient, compliant) (circa 1375), from Northern Middle English buȝsom, from early Middle English buhsum (cf. buxom), from Old English būgan (to bend), from Proto-Germanic *beuganą, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰūgʰ- (to bend). Equivalent to bow +‎ -some.
