brownsnout spookfish (plural brownsnout spookfish)

  1. A species of barreleye, Dolichopteryx longipes, with widespread tropical and temperate distribution.
    • 2012, Caspar Henderson, The Book of Barely Imagined Beings, Granta Books, published 2013, page 107:
The Brownsnout spookfish, which is usually found more than 1,000 metres down beneath tropical-to-temperate waters, looks as if it has four eyes, but there are really just two that are each split into two parts, as if by grotesquely exaggerated bifocal spectacles, with one part looking upward and the other downward.
