From Old French catellier (“to excite, cause tremors”) (compare French chatouiller), from Medieval Latin catilō (“to tickle”), from Frankish *kitilōn (“to tickle”), from Proto-Germanic *kitilōną, frequentative of *kitōną (“to tickle”), from Proto-Indo-European *geyd- (“to stick, jab, tickle”).
