    • 1934, George Orwell, chapter 21, in Burmese Days[1]:
      At the foot of the veranda a chokra lay on his back in the sun, pulling the punkah rope with his heel and shading his face with a broad strip of banana leaf.
    • 1990, Khushwant Singh, chapter 16, in Delhi, Penguin:
      'Livin' is cheaper here,' he said. Back home we won't have an ayah or chokra.'
