Etymology edit
From Ottoman Turkish دلاق, from Proto-Turkic *til (“tongue”). The change from front to back vowel predates the earliest written record in the 11th century. The cognate dil retains the front vowel. Cognate with Azerbaijani dıllaq, etc.
