Etymology edit

From Dalmatiër (Dalmatian), person associated with the coastal region of Dalmatia (in Dutch Dalmatië, the root of the word), presently in Croatia; on account of the similar black-on-white spots on the ermine a royal dalmatic is made of; there exists a popular etymology, only 'applicable' to Dutch, that the dog breed was named after its suitability for geodetic registrations of the maat (measure(ment)) of a dal (dale).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˌdɑlˈmaː.(t)si.ər/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: dal‧ma‧ti‧er

Noun edit

dalmatiër m (plural dalmatiërs, diminutive dalmatiërtje n)

  1. A canine Dalmatian, a white, black-spotted breed of dog.
