Etymology

Literally 'action word', apparently a calque of German Tätigkeitswort coined by P. Abuls in 1902, which soon became the accepted standard instead of previous coinages, such as K.Mīlenbahs' izteiksmes vārds (expression word) or laika vārds (time word) (cf. German Zeitwort), or J. Neikens' 1850 term darīšanas vārds (making word).[1]
